The mask Tom Hardy had to wear as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was a design that not only had to look like a breathing apparatus but also served as a microphone to amplify Hardy’s voice which was otherwise muffled by the mask. Hardy also had to learn a new accent for the role, based on the voice of Bartley Gorman, a Romani bare-knuckle boxer from Wales.
